Research - Review of previous student's work

Colour

What I like about this is the different types of colour that was included in the video. This was my favourite in particular because of all the different colour contrast in the background and it makes the singer stand out more because of the black colour clothing. It also would keep the audience peeled on the music video and attract there attention making them want to watch more.

Editing/Prop

What I particularly like about this bit of the music video, is how they used the piano app on the tablet and done the beat throughout the whole song and when it came to editing they managed to synch it perfectly making it flow really good. This is also a good prop as it relates to the song and fits in well with the video

Also, with this edit they used rewind and slow motion for particular shots to give the music video some life and make it more appealing for the viewer, as they will be seeing something different.

Locations

When looking at locations to shoot for a music video you got to take into consideration the genre of the song and if it would relate and fit well to the song. I like how this group used different locations and filmed different shots and took into consideration about base tracks, and when it came to editing they fitted it in well and produced a good video.

Research - Mainstream or Independent

You can tell the difference between mainstream and independent artist and can identify what makes these artist fall under these labels. This can be seen through the production value of the music video. Mainstream record labels such as Def Jam recordings and Island records distribute music videos world-wide and have the best artist recording music for them.

Mainstream artist: Drake

Record Label

Drake is among many record labels such as Universal MotownYoung MoneyCash MoneyRepublicOVO Sound. His talents has made him become noticed by many well-known record labels who also has big name artist in it such as Nicki Minaj, Lil wayne and Rick Ross.

Genre

Drake's music is usually in the genre of Rap/Hip-Hop

Target audience

Drake's target audience is set at young people and anyone really who enjoys listening to Hip-Hop, Rap & R&B as I think it is aimed at people who could relate to his life and also for people with dreams and ambitions. He has a large female fan base because of the type of songs he would produce, slow soft songs that appeals to them.

Merchandise

Drake has many merchandises going from hats, jumpers, hoodies, t-shirts and wears these products in his music videos to try and promote it to his fans watching to generate sales.

Independent artist: Giggs

Record label

Giggs is apart of a few independent labels in the UK such as XL RecordingsTakeover Entertainment and SN1 Records. He is the leader of SN1 (Spare No 1), alongside his brothers Gunna Dee, Joe Grind, Spender and Young Giggs (YG), Kyze and Tiny Boost. The group's main producers are Boom Productions (aka BoomBlast), Universe, Pablo Productions, Paws Productions, Bayoz Musik and Simple.

Genre

The genre Giggs started of with was UK Rap/Grime music in his area and once he began to get noticed he kind of changed his style to Hip-Hop.

Target audience

The target audience I believe Giggs wanted to illustrate his music to was to young males and females from the London when he first started his music career making singles that would be played at party events. His target audience expanded and got bigger in London increasing his fan base

Questions

1. Some viewers maybe favour for either mainstream or independent artists depending on if their music appeals to them or not. People might go for one rather than the other because of how the videos re produced or because of the meaning the artists puts in their lyrics.

2. Having high status means that you will have more money and having more money will allow you to be more creative with the music video's they produce as it will attract a whole lot more of people to watch the video.

3. The mainstream appeals more to more because the music video tends to be more attractive and also because they tend to have other artist featured in the video which are artists that I enjoy listening to

Research - Analysing costume, setting/location

Questions

1. The amount of costumes in music videos varies depending on the style of song and also the type of genre the song it. As you could see in the videos I chose, Pop and R&B tend to not change the costume to much as the song illustrated the artist so they may have wanted to keep the costume to a small amount. Whereas, in the Hip-Hop genre music video the costume changed a lot through the whole song because the artist are trying to show the audience there lifestyle through the music video.

2. There was a clear difference between the different genre types I selected in terms of the amount of style of the costumes. As a wide selection of different clothing was in the Hip-Hop music video to illustrate the artists lifestyle the style was also different to the others as the clothing was much more stand out than the others through the colour selection and how the clothing were dressed on the people involved.

 3. The similarities between the use of location in the different use of genre were that they were all in urban place/area's. This is effective as they are trying to keep it up-to-date with the time period we are in and also so it can appeal easily with there target audiences. The differences is where the locations is set and how the setting is made out to look. With a high budget you could tell which music video stood out the most through the location/setting it was set in.

4. Props are significant in a music video as it illustrates what's happening in the music video and makes it much more clearer for the audience to understand what's going on. The props used in the music video's  makes it more appealing to the target audience and links with the genre type of the song.
