Reflecting back on the AS year

During AS Year, I was able to develop a range of skills such as blogging, researching, planning and producing which contributed towards my final outcome. For example, I learnt how the production of filming works and from there onwards, I was able to understand the different types of camerawork and which editing style suited best alongside.

Before I started AS Media, I had a personal blog of mine but my blogging style were very limited to text. However, after a year of learning new & innovative ways of blogging; I’m glad to say that it has begun to reflect onto my personal blog.

Some examples are:

  • Prezis
  • V-logs
  • TimeToast
  • Powtoon
  • GIFs
  • Animatic
Most importantly, I learnt how to use Final Cut Pro (to be honest, at first, it was really confusing but as time went by it became easier to use) which was where the editing of the shots and sounds took place in. Also I learnt how to use Camtasia which was useful in comparing various videos during my evaluation.

Reflecting back on the AS year

This Prezi is briefly showing what I had learned about music videos from last year July. It also shows an example of a analysis to a video of my choice using the knowledge that I had gained,

Mainstream Or Independent

It's very easy to identify a music video which is performed by an artist who belongs to a mainstream label or an independent label. An obvious factor which separates the two labels is the production value of the music video. Mainstream Labels such as Island Records & Def Jam distribute high quality music videos filmed with multiple high definition camera's. Alternatively, artists who belong to an independent or no label tend to have a low production value and this is evident through the mise en scene.

Example of a mainstream's artist music video :

DJ Khaled - They Don't love you no more

  • High Definition 1080p
  • Expensive Cars
  • Shots were filmed on a boat which had a basketball court (ridiculous)
  • Helicopter
  • Dozens of quad bikes
  • Gold chains
  • Designer clothing
  • Close Ups
The message the artist is trying to convey to his audience through the high production is that he and his team are wealthy. You can argue that this music video appeals to his audience (mainly his fans) as the music video portrays the materialistic items he explores within his lyrics. In other words the music video acts as evidence. The video motivates his fans as you will rarely see these expensive object in your day to day life on the other hand, you can argue the artist my be using this music video to flaunt his wealth to the audience.

Example of a music video from an unsigned artist :

Mitch & Timbo

  • Filmed on the streets
  •  Lack of different locations
  • Close ups of performers
Mainstream Artist Vs Independent Artist

Dj Khaled

Cash Money Records.jpgDJ Khaled in 2011.jpg

Record Label

Dj Khaled belongs to the record label " Cash Money Records" this record label is owned by the wealthy artist and entrepreneur "Birdman". Due to the success of DJ Khaled's career he has managed to start his own his record label called "We The Best Music." this record label consists of mainly upcoming underground rappers for example "Ace Hood."

Genre

Dj Khaled specialises in the Genre Hip Hop / Rap

Target Audience

His music is aimed generally males who enjoy rap music and hip/hop. You can argue that his music are aimed at individuals who are working class  as his music generally reinforces the concept of getting to the top from the bottom in other words, motivational music.

Mercahandise  In his latest music music video he promotes his latest headphones "We the best headphones." There are several Close Up's  Dj Khaled headphones in order to promote the product to  generate  more sales

Conventions of a music video

Research - Laura Mulvey's Theory

Bellow you will see two videos which illustrate Laura Mulvey's theory perfectly.

This music video is by JLo and Iggy Azalea. The whole video is very sexual and illustrate that they are styled accordingly to the male gaze.

This video by Nicki Minaj, again reinforces the idea that females in music videos are most likely going to be very sexual and try to appeal to the male audience.

Research - Carol Vernallis Theory

This is a great example as the music video follows Carol Vernallis theory very well.

The editing is very obvious, we see the colours of the music video change from black and white, we see many jumpcuts, the camera moves in time with the music.
We also see many establishing shots to show the different settings, from outdoors and indoors. There are frequent close ups of the main artists face.

Research - Functions of a music video

Music videos are usually the visuals used to accompany a song.

Their main function is to promote an artist, especially when introducing new artists as this allows people to identify with artists through their music videos. This may not be the case with all music videos but it is very common. A very good example of a group who's music video really put them on the map and made everyone remember who they are is Magic! - Rude

Another function of a music video may be to send a message or to symbolism bigger things in order for the artist to get through to their audience, and to evoke emotion into audiences. Micheal Jackson was an artist who did this a lot and his music video of Man in The mirror is a great example.

Artist may use music videos to represent themselves in a different way, in order to change the perception of themselves in the media. For example Miley Cyrus - wrecking ball was used to represent her as a sex symbol in order to remove her Disney 'Hannah Montana' image.

Music videos can also be used to promote films, there are many music videos which do this and in their music videos they use images from the movies. A good recent example of this is Alicia Keys ft Kendrick Lamar - Its on again.

Reflecting back on the AS year

In the AS year I developed a range of skills in many areas. This included new blogging skills, while researching, planning and producing my final project, mainly while evaluating my final project. I also learnt new skills while filming my film opening. The actual the filming process of it and the editing process of putting all our shots together,

At the beginning of AS media I had never blogged before, however during the year I found new and innovative ways to present my work such as

  • Prezi
  • Wordle
  • M.uraly
  • Vlogs
  • TimeToast
  • GIFs
  • Powtoon
The use of these medias enhanced the presentation of my blog instead of my work just being typed up. It also helped showcase the range of new skills I had gained.

I also learnt a range of technical skills such as learning how to use
  • Final cut pro ( Most of the shots were put together with the use of final cut pro. I had never used final cut pro before, an although it took some getting use to I finally got the hang of it and even managed to create a story board anamatic.)
  • Handbrake ( This allowed me to save my work from FinalCutPro and export it and then upload it onto our blog.)
  • Motion ( This allowed me and my group to create our own ident for our film opening)
  • Camtasia (Camtasia was used as a different way to present my work. I used it during my evaluation. It allowed me to compare different videos with each other.)

Reflecting back on the AS year

In this Prezi I have briefly shown what I learned about music videos from the last few lessons in June.
