Planning - Reflection on blog
In comparison to the last blog reflection I believe that I have improved on the consistency of my posts and I am now posting much more regularly. I have also been using many different ways of presenting my work, in order to keep track of what media technologies I am using to present my work I am keeping a tally of how often I use particular ways of presenting my work and which ones I could use more often.

Planning - Revisions to pitch (Social Media)
After getting our feedback and finding out that we did in fact need to promote our artist on more that one social media outlet and that we also needed to change the name from 'mediagroup6' to 'SashVocals' we made those changes.
FACEBOOK - SASH VOCALS
TWITTER - SASHVOCALS
INSTAGRAM - SASHVOCALS

Planning - Pitch Feedback
The points that group 6 have to work on from this point is
- Making a blog to show what costume/s the rest of the cast will be wearing.
- Rethinking the industry section of our pitch. Maybe finding a more suitable record label for our artist.
- Developing our social media for our artist even further. Maybe creating an instagram and facebook, and renaming the twitter account.
These are some of the feedback sheets that we got from everyone in class and what they though about our pitch and maybe what we can improve.

Planning - PITCH Synergy (Shpresa Smakiq)
One key element that we have all decided on using for synergy is this particular hand gesture. The reason we have chosen this is because it is easy to use and it is also symbolising a well known hand gesture for 'Hope' which ties in well with our theme of finding something wonderful. We all tend to hope for something wonderful.

Album Cover |
- For the album cover, I chose to use a picture of the London skies as our artist is from London and most of our video will be shot in london.
- The foreground of the cover has our main artist: Sash Vocals to show the audience how he looks like
- Sash Vocals has his hands in a prayer sign because that is our main synergy will show through our music video and it also symbolizes hope
- The artist name & title of the song are in the name font.
Planning - PITCH Social Media (Sarah Obende)
We created a group twitter account
and followed the college twitter so they can be updated with us when filming.
Planning - PITCH Audience 2 (Sarah Obende)
I went on Angel's fan official facebook page, fansites and music pages.
We asked the fans some questions about what they would expect to see from his videos/ genre of music & we got some useful feedback that will help us in improving our video.

Planning - Final Song Choice

Analysis of Costume, Props, Location & Setting
Before a music video is produced all costume, location, props etc are planned. Generally, the setting/location would reflect the mood of the song or the lyrics of the song. For example, it wold be unlikely for a song about partying and having fun to be filmed in a graveyard as there's no correlation. These aspects of a music video normally relate to the genre of the song that's being performed. Typical locations/prop/costume of a specific genre could be:
![]() |
An expensive car that the artist uses to flaunt his (rap) |
![]() |
A stage where the band performs the song ( Rock ) The music video I have chosen to analyse is Fat Joe ft Lil Wayne - Make it rain. The genre of the song is rap. |
Costume: Fat joe and Lil Wayne are both wearing wearing baggy t -shirts, hoodies, sunglasses baggy jeans. this reinforces there identity, as people who use to wear baggy clothes were those from deprived ares in other words "the hood." it was also fashionable and trendy during that period of time so they are also trying to look cool as well as making a statement that they're from the hood.
In addition the rappers are also wearing large gold chains, belts and watches. This is a convention of rap music videos as it's more than likely that you will see rappers wear large expensive jewellery. The whole purpose of this is to portray how wealthy they are. They also rap about these materialistic objects so you can argue it's used as evidence to convince there viewers that they're speaking the truth.
Lastly, the women who are referred to as "hoes" in song are seen to be hardly wearing anything ! They are wearing bikini (despite being in the rain) to display their slim body whilst dancing in a promiscuous manner in order to attract viewers. Again, the rappers rap about these "hoes" so the girls being dressed in this way just illustrates the lyrics of the song.
Location/Setting
The location of the is unknown however, it's set in a studio and outside a large building. Numerous of rap videos are set in a studio with a plain screen so the audience can focus on them performing and t the cars, clothes and the pretty girls. The reason for the outdoor location was to convey the rain as the song is called "make it rain"
Props
Expensive cars, money falling from the sky and a huge stack of money which lil wayne was able to sit were all used as it illustrates the lyrics of the song. The phrase "make it rain" refers to throwing money so money was in this video to stress how rich they are.

Research - Reflection on Progress
Looking back to last year, I think that I have shown a big improvement in my blogging skills and how I've used different kinds media technologies to make my work look much more better.
My blogging knowledge went during the summer holidays, but as I have begun doing my A2 course for media, I have become more familiar with the media technologies which I learned in the AS year, but now being in A2 I have to be able to use all sorts of different techniques that will make my work look more better than how I started off. My blogs are now much more up to date and more detailed than before as its essential when trying to ensure the best grade possible.
The media technologies used have been Prezi, TimeToast, Animoto, Slideshare. With the induction of new ways to make my work look much better than before, I've used these to give more life to my work, making it look exciting and not boring and rubbish.
If I was to mark myself out of 20 I'd give myself a 14, because I believe I can use different media effectively and use them at appropriate times, but I think I can still improve on things that will make the work I produce stand out to other by being much more creative.

What is Vernallis Theory and how well did you follow it in post production?
Vernallis’ theory focuses on four key elements of music videos, narrative, camera, editing and diegesis. Vernallis re-enforces the idea that most music videos have a clear narrative through the use of performance.
However, the narrative for our music video does not follow Vernallis theory because the actions in the music video did not reflect upon the meaning behind the lyrics. Nevertheless, the editing did pursue the theory as continious editing was broken, constant use of jump cuts and also being able to have a rhythmic basis linked in with the song alongside the camera moving in sync with the music. We used a wide range of common shots as well as other basic shots such as mid shots and 360. We was successful in achieving the diegsis as we used a range of repeated shots to emphasise the importance of the lyrics.
For a first attempt, I think we did really well as a group trying to experiment and keep up with the Vernallis theory in post-production. However, I still strongly feel there is still enough room for improvement.

What are base tracks and why do most videos contain them? Evaluate how well you made use of them in your videos.
Base tracks are a set of videos from when you film the artist in the same location throughout the whole song. Base tracks are repeated when the shot type is changed. Most videos use them because they help put emphasis on a particular scene during the song. In our music video we used base tracks alongside a wide variety of shot types to portray the artist’s emotions as well as to promote them.
How did you use markers to help you lip sync and how successful were you/your group at lip syncing?
We edited our video using Final Cut Pro and the markers were very useful because when we had to match the video to the original song. The marker was a guide to know where to link the first words of the lip sync to the actual song sang by the original artist. This meant that when spitting the lip sync video there won’t be any mistakes following the storyboard. Overall, I think for our first attempt; the outcome was well circulate and produced making it successful.

Research - Evaluate lip sync tutorial
What are the most common shot types in music videos and did you make good use of them in your music video?
The most common shot types in a music video according to .... are establishing shots, master shots and close ups. Me and my group aimed to follow these shot types and tried to make good use of them in our own mini music video. I believe we achieved this quite successfully, especially the close up shots, however I do think that we could have used some more establishing shots and master shots, but overall there is a good balance of different shot types in our group video. As this was the first time, we, as a group attempted at filming and editing a music video, there are still many things we can improve on with our camera skills.
What is Vernallis Theory and how well did you follow it in post production?
Carol Vernallis theory focuses on four key concepts of music videos, narrative, camera, editing and diegesis. In regards to the narrative our music video does not follow Vernallis theory, the music video is not a response to the lyrics, the actions in the music video do not reflect the lyrics and Vernallis says they should. Our editing however managed to follow the theory, continuity editing was broken, there were many jump cuts, our editing had a rhythmic basis connected to the song and we aimed to make the camera moved with the music, we also managed to include base tracks into our music video. As mentioned before, the main shots in a music video are establishing shots, master shots and close ups, we managed to use close ups the most but still got a range of other shots too but there is still room for improvement. We also aimed to follow diegsis, by repeating some shots to show the importance of the lyrics. For a first attempt I feel we managed to follow Vernallis theory very well in post production.
What are base tracks and why do most videos contain them? Evaluate how well you made use of them in your videos.
Base tracks are images which will be referred back to multiple times in a music video. Most videos contain base tracks to emphasis the main artist or to show the most important part of the video. In our mini music video there are many base tracks, the whole thing is nearly made from base tracks however there are some cut aways in order to make the video more interesting.
How did you use markers to help you lip sync and how successful were you/your group at lip syncing?
In order to edit our shots and make them into a real music video, me and my group used FinalCutPro, this was very useful and successful, the markers helped us match the audio and visuals correctly. Final cut pro allowed us to cover any lip syncing mistakes and allowed us to make the video match correctly. I did not lip sync in the video however I feel that for a first attempt my group member did very well and it is a good foundation to start off with and improvements can be made in our final music video.

The Function of a Music Video
Despite the fact all music videos are different they all share one similar purpose. Their main function is to promote their song to in order to generate sales and popularity. However, nowadays a lot more artists ( especially mainstream artists ) use their music video's to promote merchandise as well as their music. Another function of a music video may be to explore an issue or a political topic. Artists will use their music video to illustrate their opinion on the severe topic and attempt to persuade their audience to share the same view as them. Examples of these music videos are : Ryan Macklemore - I Can't change & Kendrick Lamar - B*tch don't kill my vibe. Macklemore explores the view of "being gay" within today's society whereas Kendrick Lamar uses his music video to convey his thoughts on the drug "molly" a dangerous drugs people rely to have a good time.

Research - Skills audit
Thinking back to my AS practical work when I was doing my opening sequence to a teen film, my skills in research wasn't as good as I had little experience in knowing how to develop my ideas but slowly became familiar with certain technologies that helped me broadening my ideas more to ensure that my work was better and looked more professional that would help me get a good grade. Now, I believe I have improved on my skills in research, you can see a big change in my work. For example, using technologies such as Prezi and Slideshare to present some pieces of my work, becoming more comfortable in presenting and getting my ideas noticed in a easier way. As a result of learning new skills in research it has made me become much better at blogging than how I was when I first began, and has made my work stand out and looked more presentable

Research - Lip sync and visual style
1. The most common shot types you'll see in music video are close up, mid shot, tilt and panning shots, establishing shot, long shots and extreme close ups. Those for me are the main shot types in a music video I believe as they get the opportunity to sell themselves to the audience, to capture shots of the product they are trying to promote and also get in shots of themselves in many different ways to try and stand out in the music video. With our practise make of the music video, because of limited time we had we couldn't use many shot types as we expected but we used main ones such as close up and long shots to capture the artist in many different angles as possible and wanted her to stand out.
2. Vernallis theory studied the camera work and editing in a music video, as it focuses on 4 main functions. Narrative, editing, camera work and diegesis. Our first attempt, we didn't follow some of her points in theory due to the location we was set in. For example, the location we was in didn't give us the chance to be more creative and try and follow her theory in the narrative section so that was a disadvantage for us. When looking at editing, we used base tracks and it worked effectively as when we managed to edit and synch everything, it went and worked well together. On top of this we used different shot types which showed different emotions and actions, and when it came to editing it all together we managed to pick out the really good emotions and put them in the final edit. Some shots were used again as this showed the importance of the shot and how it symbolises the lyrics.
3. Base tracks are when you film the artist the same position throughout the whole duration of the song, and do that for different shot types. Most music video's contain music videos because they may want to symbolise a particular scene for when they are promoting their product, they may use to so that they have a variety of different shot types in the music video as this will make it more attractive and appealing to the viewers watching. In our video we used base tracks and tried to cover as many different shot types as possible. In certain shot types, it brought out both emotion and showed the product we was trying to promote.
4. We edited our video on final cut pro, something we was all familiar with and had experience with. We put down the song and began putting down our base tracks. To be able to understand where to place our markers to ensure that the lip synch was correctly down, we marked the first word on the song and began marking the first words on our version and lined them all up in place. This mean that when we got to the cutting stage the lip synch was performed well and there wasn't any mistakes during the editing process. As a result it was a successful process as the video flowed well and we produced an okay video for our first attempt.

Research : Carol Vernalis
What was her theory ?
Carole Vernallis analysed the ways in which camera work and editing contributes to the construction of a music video. She came to a conclusion that a lot more editing occurs within a music video in comparison to other media texts such as a film. For example :
She argues that it stands out as disjuncture. Furthermore, Carol Identified that the editing in a music video seems to have a rhythmic basis which is closely connected to the song for instance, cutting to the tempo of the beat to the song. The purpose of this is to reflect the experiential properties of sound.

Carole Vernallis states that continuity editing is used in a music video in order to draws attention to the screen and what is happening. She states that editing such as :
Vernallis also states that establishing shots, close ups are constantly used throughout a music video. The style of framing of the video is distinctive to the video and also the camera may move in time with the lyrics. Master shots are also very common,
