Research : Carol Vernalis

What was her theory ?

Carole Vernallis analysed the ways in which camera work and editing contributes to the construction of a music video. She came to a conclusion that a lot more editing occurs within a music video in comparison to other media texts such as a film. For example :

  •  Several fast paced cuts
  •     Base tracks
  •    Many jump cuts
  •    Constant Match Cuts

She argues that it stands out as disjuncture. Furthermore, Carol Identified that the editing in a music video seems to have a rhythmic basis which is closely connected to the song for instance, cutting to the tempo of the beat to the song. The purpose of this is to reflect the experiential properties of sound.

Editng & Continuity Editing
Carole Vernallis states that continuity editing is used in a music video in order to draws attention to the screen and what is happening. She states that editing such as :

  • Jump Cuts
  • Cutting with lyrics
  • Extreme changes in pace
  • Wipes
  • Special Effects
  • Soft focus
Are all used in a music video .

Camera Shots & Camera Movement

Vernallis also states that establishing shots, close ups are constantly used throughout a music video. The style of framing of the video is distinctive to the video and also the camera may move in time with the lyrics. Master shots are also very common,
