Research - Lip sync and visual style

1. The most common shot types you'll see in music video are close up, mid shot, tilt and panning shots, establishing shot, long shots and extreme close ups. Those for me are the main shot types in a music video I believe as they get the opportunity to sell themselves to the audience, to capture shots of the product they are trying to promote  and also get in shots of themselves in many different ways to try and stand out in the music video. With our practise make of the music video, because of limited time we had we couldn't use many shot types as we expected but we used main ones such as close up and long shots to capture the artist in many different angles as possible and wanted her to stand out.

2. Vernallis theory studied the camera work and editing in a music video, as it focuses on 4 main functions. Narrative, editing, camera work and diegesis. Our first attempt, we didn't follow some of her points in theory due to the location we was set in. For example, the location we was in didn't give us the chance to be more creative and try and follow her theory in the narrative section so that was a disadvantage for us. When looking at editing, we used base tracks and it worked effectively as when we managed to edit and synch everything, it went and worked well together. On top of this we used different shot types which showed different emotions and actions, and when it came to editing it all together we managed to pick out the really good emotions and put them in the final edit. Some shots were used again as this showed the importance of the shot and how it symbolises the lyrics.

3. Base tracks are when you film the artist the same position throughout the whole duration of the song, and do that for different shot types. Most music video's contain music videos because they may want to symbolise a particular scene for when they are promoting their product, they may use to so that they have a variety of different shot types in the music video as this will make it more attractive and appealing to the viewers watching. In our video we used base tracks and tried to cover as many different shot types as possible. In certain shot types, it brought out both emotion and showed the product we was trying to promote.

4. We edited our video on final cut pro, something we was all familiar with and had experience with. We put down the song and began putting down our base tracks. To be able to understand where to place our markers to ensure that the lip synch was correctly down, we marked the first word on the song and began marking the first words on our version and lined them all up in place. This mean that when we got to the cutting stage the lip synch was performed well and there wasn't any mistakes during the editing process. As a result it was a successful process as the video flowed well and we produced an okay video for our first attempt.
